Geese at Montrose basin

Birdwatching and wildlife!

Scotland is famous for its wildlife! Among iits areas of outstanding, unspoiled beauty and its wildlife reserves, you'll find plants, birds, fish and other animals living almost untouched by man.

Just North of Lunan Lodge is the outstanding Montrose Basin. This huge tidal basin is an internationally important site for many species of migratory birds and fish. 198 species have been recorded here, mostly over the winter. You can see Pink-footed geese, Knot, Redshank, Eider, Shelduck, Wigeon, and many others nesting here.

North of Montrose, you'll find the National Nature Reserve at St Cyrus Beach. The cliffs and dunes of St Cyrus support a distinctive range of plants, including many southern species. The reserve is also noted for its rich variety of insects, particularly butterflies and over 200 kinds of moth. Breeding birds include stonechats and skylarks, and you’re also likely to see fulmars nesting on the cliffs.

You can explore on your own, or you can visit the various guided sites which are operated by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and Scottish National Heritage. But for the best experience, you can't beat a local guide. We've teamed up with Russell Nisbet, a hugely experienced guide who knows the area intimately, and will help you get the very best from your experience. Call him on 01674 660238.
